Spiritual Development
Reflections
My siblings and I were raised by parents who used their strong Christian values as the soil to keep our family firmly rooted. My father (a lay preacher and organist) and my mother (in youth development and administration) have always been heavily involved in church, which meant it was a key element of our lives. My sisters, my brother and I read bible lessons, performed in Sunday school plays, and sang on the choir. We were indeed immersed in church life and Christian living, and it all helped to positively shape our adult lives.
Armed with a strong awareness of Mommy and Daddy’s love, we developed a sense of security that allowed us never to feel that our needs would be left unmet. Our parents prayed for and with us, and we knew that we were literally and figuratively “covered”. To this day, we are certain that it is the constant prayer of our parents and grandparents that has seen us through many situations. As one friend once said "Grandma was always rubbing out her knees (on the floor) praying to God to help keep us safe and doing well in school". We also learned that God, our Super-Father, an infinitely greater source than even our amazing parents, supplies our needs, and rejoices in our gratitude and praise.
In my book, Prayers for School Days, I cover some prayers of gratitude, and share with you some of those valuable lessons that have impacted my life in immensely constructive ways. To pass on the power of prayer to a child is to give him or her on-tap, direct access to their best and highest self. Take a peek at page 14 when you’re faced with feelings of jealousy, for example, and be reminded of God’s grace in His willingness to supply ALL our needs.
My Christian values have governed my life, and some of my earliest lessons still ring true. My parents would remind us::
- "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"
- "Children obey your parents in the Lord for this is right".
I must admit, being the smart-mouthed children we were, my siblings and I would quote the scripture "Fathers do not provoke thy children to wrath", and this would send our good natured Mommy and Daddy into peals of laughter, because they knew that the lessons were still well-received.
When you share prayers from my book, these lessons will invoke joy-filled, character-building conversations amongst your family too. Each of the biblical lessons of the power of prayer, serve as a natural Confidence Builder for a child, and provide clear illustrations through the stories of many like Daniel, Samuel and Joseph, that with faith even as small as a mustard seed, you can move mountains. Order your copy of Prayers for School Days, and keep those valuable lessons on hand. |
